Course Structure

Wharton’s MBA curriculum offers depth, breadth, and options. The curriculum emphasizes an intensive, flexible core in general management, plus the depth of 18 majors and breadth of nearly 200 electives.You will customize your learning by selecting a course pathway through content areas based on your education, career experience, and goals — not just through selection of your electives and majors, but through choices in the core.

Core

Offered as quarter- or semester-long courses, the core curriculum covers traditional management disciplines- with an emphasis on analytical rigor — accounting, finance, marketing, management, operations, statistics, and microeconomics — as well as the leadership, ethics, and communication skills necessary for leadership. This series of courses provides a rigorous grounding for the individualized coursework that follows.
Wharton’s core includes nine credit units, distributed in two parts:
Fixed Core: 3.5 credit units fixed with your cohort.
Flexible Core: 5.5 credit units you choose to define your own path.

Elective Curriculum

Wharton’s elective curriculum, 10 credit units, provides depth and breadth across traditional and nontraditional areas of management education.
Majors: Choose from 18 majors.
Electives: Choose among 200+ electives across 10 academic departments, or take courses in others of Penn’s 11 world-leading schools.

International Exchange & Double Degrees

You can apply for one of the dual-degree programs if you are a current first-year student at one of our partner schools (except any of the Medical Sciences programs, which have different application guidelines) or you plan to pursue the first year of the dual degree at Wharton.

    Program Details:
    • Approximately 30 students will be selected by WEP to participate in this program.
    • The auction will take place during one week in late March and will have 2 rounds.
    • Final pitch materials to companies are due approximately 5 days after the auction closes. Pitch materials may include: traditional cover letters, slide decks, videos, website, etc. (Start-ups participating in the Auction will have selected 2 questions to which they want the winning bidders to reply in their pitch materials.)

    • Companies will be asked to contact students they are interested in interviewing within 7 days of pitch receipt.
    • The program will be run using a modified version of the MBA Course Auction System. Students will not be required to use course points, but will, instead, be issued points specifically for use for the Start-Up Auction only.

    How to Apply

    The minimum requirements to be eligible to apply for admission to the MBA program are as follows:

    • Completion of an undergraduate program in an accredited U.S. college or its equivalent in another country
    • Results of the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
    • Submission of the Wharton application
    • Results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) unless you have earned an undergraduate or master’s degree in an English-speaking country or from an institution in which English is the language of instruction. To waive the TOEFL, you must include a letter requesting the waiver in your application AND documentation that your education was in English.

    Essays

    The Admissions Committee wants to get to know you on both a professional and personal level. We encourage you to be introspective, candid, and succinct. Most importantly, we suggest you be yourself.First-time applicants and reapplicants are required to complete the same set of essay questions.

    Questions, Class of 2018:

    1. (Required) What do you hope to gain both personally and professionally from the Wharton MBA? (500 words)

    2.(Optional) Please use the space below to highlight any additional information that you would like the Admissions Committee to know about your candidacy. (400 words)

    Additional Question for Reapplicants:

    All reapplicants to Wharton are required to complete this essay. Explain how you have reflected on the previous decision about your application, and discuss any updates to your candidacy (e.g., changes in your professional life, additional coursework, extracurricular/volunteer engagements). (250 words).All applicants, including reapplicants can also use this section to address any extenuating circumstances. (250 words)

    Transcripts

    Transcripts of all academic work completed at the baccalaureate/undergraduate level and beyond, whether or not for credit or a degree, are required. Grades or marks may be self-reported on our online transcript template; official documents required upon admission and matriculation.

    GMAT/GRE

    All applicants must submit results of a Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) that are no more than five years old. For the Fall 2016 entering class, tests taken between October 31, 2010, and March 30, 2016, will be accepted. Scores may be self-reported; however, should you receive an offer of admission, official scores will then be requested for verification.The GMAT code for the Wharton MBA Program is G56-97-73. The GRE code is: 6802.

    TOEFL

    The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for non-native English speakers with limited exposure to English. The test may be waived by candidates who earned a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an institution at which English is the language of instruction.The TOEFL code for the Wharton MBA Program is: 2926 (02).

    Interviews

    Interviews are by invitation only, following a thorough review of the completed application. Instructions are provided at the time of invitation.

    Additional Requirements for MBA/MA–Lauder Program

    MBA/MA–Lauder applicants must complete a 20-minute Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) by telephone to assess language skills. For more information about the OPI and to schedule an interview, please visit the Lauder website.
