Scholarships
Through the generosity of a number of our alumni, former faculty, and other friends, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering offers scholarships to a large number of students in the undergraduate program. Scholarships that reward academic achievement, service to the profession, and community service are awarded annually on the basis of a competitive application process.
In addition, students have access to scholarships and fellowships from a number of professional organizations. Scholarships from inside and outside the department total about $50,000-$100,000 per year.

Course Structure
Our undergraduate mechanics program offers a comprehensive curriculum in structural mechanics, mechanics of materials, and dynamics. It is distinct from the mechanical engineering degrees in its focus on mechanics and orientation toward fundamental, rigorous approaches to problem solving.
As part of our undergraduate mechanics program, we offer an option in astronautics, which is the study of navigation outside of Earth’s atmosphere. This program includes the fundamental courses in mechanics, and supplements those fundamentals with courses such as satellite dynamics, astrodynamics, aerodynamics, and controls systems. Graduates typically work for institutions such as Boeing, NASA or their contractors.
International Exchange & Double Degrees
IESP prepares UW-Madison engineering students to study abroad and receives international exchange students coming to study at the College of Engineering.
With more than 20 programs, including many with instruction in English, IESP is here to help you gain flexibility, adaptability, confidence and crosscultural skills for the job market and fulfill your desire for adventure and learning.
Internships
Students gain valuable “real world” engineering experiences working with a variety of industries and governmental agencies through our dynamic cooperative education and summer intern programs. Basic requirements for experiences include working full-time, competitively paid, completing engineering assignments and working under the supervision of an engineer.
Obtaining work experience prior to completing your degree requirements typically increases employment opportunities and starting salaries at graduation. Most UW engineering co-ops work full-time in an engineering position from Jan. – Aug. or May – Dec. The co-op provides a solid eight to twelve months of paid engineering work experience. Alternating assignments are also an option.
The Summer Internship is for students seeking engineering employment during the summer months. These 12-14 week assignments provide students exposure to engineering while enabling the employer to fill short-term project needs.
Requirements
Research & Technical Papers
Hands-on experience in research can be gained by undergraduate students through participation in the work conducted in the world-class research labs of our faculty. Students pursue lab assistantship positions for many reasons: to explore research as a career option, to expand their hands-on experience in materials science and engineering techniques in real-world environments; to work side-by-side work with experienced researchers, or to pursue their curiosities and passions. Specific experience or course work generally is not a prerequisite for undergraduate research, rather curiosity, enthusiasm, and a commitment to critical thinking and doing what is required.
