Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) is an engineering discipline that applies the tools of basic and applied sciences and engineering to the manufacture and application of materials and devices, because essentially every technology (historical, modern, and future) depends on materials development and innovation. The four broad classes of Materials to which this paradigm is applied are metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites.

Scholarships
Carnegie Mellon offers the following scholarships:
Carnegie Scholarships
Carnegie Mellon offers a Carnegie Scholarship to incoming first-year students. Carnegie Scholarships are awarded to academically and artistically talented middle income students who qualify for little to no need-based financial aid. Carnegie Scholarships are open to all qualified U.S. citizens and permanent residents, regardless of race or national origin. You must apply for need-based financial aid to be considered.
Reserve Officer Training Corp (ROTC) Scholarships
Air Force ROTC Scholarships
Two-, three- and three-and-a-half year scholarships are available to qualified undergraduate and graduate Carnegie Mellon students who join the Air Force ROTC program. Scholarships range from $15,000/year toward tuition, plus $600 for books/year and a monthly tax-free allowance that ranges from $250-400/month depending on your year in school.
Army ROTC Scholarships
The Army ROTC offers two, three and four year scholarships to qualified students. The scholarships cover full tuition and fees per year plus $1,200 per year for books. All contracted students also receive stipends of $300-500 per month.
Naval-Marine Corps ROTC Scholarships
The NROTC offers two-, three- and four-year scholarships based on competitive national and regional selection. While on a Naval scholarship, the student will receive full tuition (including all related fees), a textbook stipend of $750 per year, a monthly stipend (starting at $250 per month freshman year and increasing to $400 per month by senior year) and full active-duty pay and benefits while on summer training cruises.
Corporate & Foundation Partner Scholarships
Carnegie Mellon also offers several scholarships from select corporate and foundation partners to students who demonstrate financial need via the financial aid process and meet the selection criteria requirements of the partners.
Course Details
Course Structure
Materials Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary activity that applies the principles of basic sciences and engineering to understanding the behavior of materials, their development and applications. Both our undergraduate and graduate students are exposed to this interdisciplinary approach.
International Exchange & Double Degrees
Undergraduates who excel academically have the unique opportunity to receive simultaneously or sequentially both B.S. and M.S. degrees from the department.
Internships
An industrial internship option (IIO – cooperative educational program) within the department offers an MSE student an opportunity to obtain valuable experience and insight from alternating periods in industry and on campus (beginning the spring after the sophomore year).
Requirements
Research & Technical Papers
Every year the department makes available research projects for Freshmen. The department is pleased to be able to provide research experiences for Freshmen who are seriously considering Materials Science and Engineering as a major. The faculty are keenly aware that participation in research in the department helps to convince students that majoring in Materials Science and Engineering provides new insights into engineering and wide-ranging career opportunities.
The program works in the following way. Every Fall the department puts together a list of 20 to 25 research projects for Freshmen. The research projects are in areas of active research within the department and cover most fields of materials science. Research areas are based on currently active research in the department and include the development of new ultra-high strength steels, electronic materials, magnetic materials, thin films of metals and ceramics, polymers, new materials with medical applications and the creation of new nano-scale microstructures and materials. The list of projects is usually completed by the middle of the Fall Semester.

In the College of Engineering, we steer our own course and find ourselves in the position of setting industry standards. Nanotechnology or network security, energy or biotech, taking the lead means taking chances. That’s what innovation demands.
Research and development is an investment. Businesses often turn to our faculty to expand their R&D capacity without adding FTEs. The college offers the talent, facilities, and laboratories; our partners provide financial support to pursue mutual goals.
There are different ways to approach these collaborations. Some examples include:
- PPG Industries and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation have provided funds for Carnegie Mellon to purchase a Titan 80-300 Microscope, one of the world’s most powerful, commercially-available microscopes, for nanotechnology research.
- General Motors established a research institute, the General Motors Collaborative Research Lab, to collaborate with College of Engineering faculty in developing “smart car” technology.
- IBM has supported a collaborative research exchange to discuss future technology and research opportunities.
Campus & Alumni Community
Like the world around us, the College of Engineering is growing and changing all the time. Our vision includes a commitment to innovation at graduate and undergraduate levels, a focus on multicultural, multidisciplinary study and the cutting-edge research we are known for. We welcome you to join us—to be a part of the college’s future and revisit memories of days past.
