Fellowship :
A fellowship is an award that enables a graduate student to pursue a degree full-time. Fellowship recipients are chosen through a competitive process in the national, university, school/college, or department/program level.
Project/Program Assistantship (PA) :
These titles designate graduate students employed to assist with research, training or other academic programs or projects. Project/Program Assistants are included in the labor agreement between the state of Wisconsin and the Teaching Assistants Association.
Research Assistant (RA) :
A Research Assistant must be a graduate student working toward a master’s or PhD degree. The work performed is primarily to further the education and training of the student.
Teaching Assistant (TA) :
Many departments offer teaching assistantships. This title is appropriate for graduate students who have been assigned teaching responsibilities in an instructional department under the supervision of a faculty member. Teaching Assistants are included in a labor agreement between the state of Wisconsin and the Teaching Assistants Association.
Tuition Remission :
Graduate students who have the equivalent of at least a 33.33% appointment, as a TA, PA, and/or RA, for the length of the Fall or Spring term receive full tuition remission for that term. Students are still responsible for paying their segregated fees.

Course Structure
MS degree candidates may choose from two options for their program of study: thesis option or independent study option.
Thesis Option : This option requires a minimum of 24 credits of graduate work, including at least 16 credits of graduate-level coursework and a thesis (GLE 790) worth at least 5 credits.
Independent Study Option : This option requires a minimum of 30 credits of graduate work, including at least 21 credits of graduate-level coursework and an advanced independent study project (GLE 999) worth at least 3 credits.

International Engineering Studies & Programs
International Engineering Studies and Programs (IESP) is a service unit within the College of Engineering that prepares UW-Madison engineering students to study abroad. As an IESP participant, you can choose from more than 50 study abroad programs in the Americas, Asia and the Pacific, and Europe and most programs are available for a semester or year.
International Academic Programs (IAP)
International Academic Programs (IAP) offers over 150 study abroad programs to UW-Madison students across campus. Instruction is in a wide range of languages, including many options in English.
Internships
Co-op Education/Internship Program
The Co-op/Internship Program makes possible full-time, supervised, paid engineering experiences interspersed with periods of full-time study during undergraduate education. Candidates must interview for opportunities; not all candidates are placed. Participation includes workshops and assistance in resumé writing, interview preparation and “pre-work” concerns; earned income; and one academic credit based on experience and a work report.

Text / Exam Scores
- College requires Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) scores. The subject test is not required. Average scores of students admitted last year were verbal: 582, quantitative: 788, analytical writing: 4.4. Please note that Spring 2012 applicants must take the GRE General Test before August 1, 2011. Those applying for Fall 2012 may take the GRE Revised General Test.
- Minimum required TOEFL scores are 92 (internet-based test, iBT), 237 (computer-based test), or 580 (paper-based test). The average TOEFL score for students admitted last year was 108 (iBT).

A Thesis Option MS student must submit a copy of his/her report or thesis at least 7 days in advance of the defense.The student is expected to prepare a 30-40 minute formal presentation on the thesis research or independent study project. Students are expected to defend their thesis or independent study project during the defense.
