The MSME degree is intended for students with an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, such as Aerospace Engineering. Students’ undergraduate backgrounds should include Mechanical Engineering core courses in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, mechanics of materials, dynamics of mechanical systems, systems analysis, machine design, manufacturing, and design. This degree is intended for students presenting themselves as professional Mechanical Engineers, with academic backgrounds covering both the BSME and MSME curriculum.

Scholarships
The University of Washington-Seattle has many scholarship opportunities available to our students. We provided about $19 million in scholarships to about 2700 of our undergraduate students in the past year.
- Academic Scholarships are awarded to a limited number of undergraduate students who are legal residents of Washington state. Approximately 900 awards from privately donated funds are given each year to students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and financial need.
- UW Undergraduate Academic Excellence Awards are awarded to about 50 incoming freshmen per year, with four-year tuition waiver awards of $3,000 per year. Students must be Washington residents and demonstrate financial need.
- Mary Gates Scholarships are prestigious awards given to one or two Washington residents per year. The award covers up to tuition and books for four years. Financial need is considered but is not a requirement.

Internships
A Co-op is a structured work experience which offers students academic credit. In order to maintain the highest quality program possible, employers and students must meet specific criteria to participate in the Engineering Co-op Program. Internships can qualify as a Co-op if the criteria below are met:
- Positions are three to nine months in length.
- The work is at least 50% engineering-related duties.
- The student employees are paid.
Requirements
Research & Technical Papers
Based on their research and teaching interest, faculty of the Department of Mechanical Engineering form three interest groups:(a) energy and fluids (b) mechanics and materials (c) systems and dynamics. The department currently has four focus research areas: environmental-friendly energy conversion, transportation systems, health care systems, and advanced materials and manufacturing.

Co-op is a great way to get hands-on experience in your field, get paid, and earn credits toward your degree. Unlike an internship, where you are working but not necessarily getting paid or earning credits, Co-op is a structured program with specific requirements for the student and employer.
