Scholarships
At UW-Madison there are four types of financial support, which include: (a) fellowship, (b) project/program assistant, (c) research assistant, and (d) teaching assistant.
a. Fellowship: A fellowship is an award that enables a graduate student to pursue a degree full-time. Fellowship recipients are chosen through a competitive process in the national, university, school/college, or department/program level.
b. Project / Program Assistantship (PA): These titles designate graduate students employed to assist with research, training or other academic programs or projects. Project/Program Assistants are included in the labor agreement between the state of Wisconsin and the Teaching Assistants Association.
c. Research Assistant: A Research Assistant must be a graduate student working toward a master’s or PhD degree. The work performed is primarily to further the education and training of the student.
d. Teaching Assistant (TA): This title is appropriate for graduate students who have been assigned teaching responsibilities in an instructional department under the supervision of a faculty member. Teaching Assistants are included in a labor agreement between the state of Wisconsin and the Teaching Assistants Association. International applicants who are offered a TA position are required to take the SPEAK test.

Course Structure
Master’s degree candidates choose from two options for their program of study: the thesis option (Option A), or the advanced independent study option (Option B).
(Option A) : This option requires a minimum of 24 credits of graduate work, including at least 16 credits of graduate-level coursework and a thesis (CEE 790) worth at least 5 credits.
Option B — Advanced Independent Study Option: This option requires a minimum of 30 credits of graduate work, including at least 21 credits of graduate-level coursework and an advanced independent study project (CEE 999) worth at least 3 credits.

Engineering Career Services Summer Internships
The Summer Internship is for students seeking engineering employment during the summer months. These 12-14 week assignments provide students exposure to engineering while enabling the employer to fill short-term project needs.

Administratively the department is organized into two divisions. Programs of advanced study, research and design are available through the department in the major areas listed below. The curriculum is enhanced by a variety of related programs in areas such as oceanography and limnology, land resources, water resources management, air resources management and environmental monitoring. There are also complementary research facilities such as the Water Resources Center, the Water Science and Engineering Laboratory, the Wisconsin Structures and Materials Testing Laboratory, and the Environmental Remote Sensing Center.
