Scholarships

Doctoral students who are accepted to our program usually receive financial support (tuition and stipend) for their entire period of study, provided their performance is satisfactory. A unique feature of doctoral program is support during the first year from University Fellowships; this financial independence gives beginning graduate students the freedom to explore various topics with different faculty members. For the 2010-2011 academic year, the tuition plus stipend amounts to $62,500 (tuition: $33,500, stipend: $29,000). Exceptional students receive financial supplements from the School of Engineering & Applied Science in addition to their University Fellowship.
After their first year, students are usually appointed Assistants in Research, and their tuition support and stipend come from the grants and contracts of their faculty research advisors.
Fellowships, also called grants or scholarships, are awards of money given to support a variety of activities both in the U.S. and abroad. These include:
– formal coursework and language study abroad
– independent projects and research
– internships
– community and public service
– tuition or dissertation support.
This database will help direct you to opportunities that will broaden your Yale education, expose you to experiences only available outside the classroom, and afford you occasions to experiment and challenge your abilities.
Identifying potential funding sources is only one step in garnering support for your plans. Be sure to take advantage of faculty and staff who can advise you individually as you pursue various grants and fellowships throughout your years at Yale.

Job-Search Assistance from Graduate Career Services

Graduate Career Services (GCS), at the McDougal Center, offers a number of programs focused on the academic job search. Each fall, faculty members from departments spread across the humanities, social sciences and sciences are invited to share personal search experiences and insights gleaned from serving on search committees. In addition, the director of GCS offers workshops on preparing a curriculum vitae and on preparing a cover letter. GCS and the Graduate Teaching Center also offer a joint workshop on preparing for academic interviews. In the spring, panels of graduate students who have been successful in the current job cycle discuss their experiences and offer advice to students who will be going on the market the following year. GCS also works with individual departments to offer programs specifically designed for students in those departments.
