Course Details
Course Structure
A master’s degree candidate must complete 24 credit hours of graduate-level courses, prepare a master’s thesis or project report, and pass an oral examination. The required course work is designed to complement each student’s interests and background in chemical engineering. Thesis projects cover a broad range of experimental and theoretical research topics.

Co-op Education/Internship Program
The Co-op/Internship Program makes possible full-time, supervised, paid engineering experiences interspersed with periods of full-time study during undergraduate education. Candidates must interview for opportunities; not all candidates are placed. Participation includes workshops and assistance in resumé writing, interview preparation and “pre-work” concerns; earned income; and one academic credit based on experience and a work report.

Innovative research is the heart of the graduate program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Research in the department is highly interdisciplinary, capitalizing on programs of national prominence such as the NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) and the NSF Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center (NSEC), and the nation’s largest NIH-funded Biotechnology Training Program.

Average scores of students admitted last year were verbal: 582, quantitative: 788, analytical writing: 4.4. Please note that Spring 2012 applicants must take the GRE General Test before August 1, 2011. Those applying for Fall 2012 may take the GRE Revised General Test.
- Minimum required TOEFL scores are 92 (internet-based test, iBT), 237 (computer-based test), or 580 (paper-based test). The average TOEFL score for students admitted last year was 108 (iBT).
