GAANN
The department has a GAANN (Graduate Assistantships in Areas of National Need) program funded by the US Department of Education. Domestic Graduate Students in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering with a documented financial need are eligible. GAANN fellows will in addition to their research program take part in a novel structured teaching component to prepare them for their future careers.

Course Structure
A Ph.D. degree requires completion of a total of 38 units (exclusive of seminar and research course work units), dissertation and an exit seminar. 26 units of course work in the major (materials science and engineering) and 12 units of course work in the minor (to be selected by the student in consultation with his/her Guidance Committee). The minor must represent a set of coherent courses with a technical focus which complements the major.

The multi-institutional National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program, entitled Collaborative Research and Education in Agricultural Technologies and Engineering (CREATE), provides a structured, well-integrated graduate research and educational training program that focuses on the use of transgenic plants and in-vitro plant systems for the production of industrial non-food products and biopharmaceuticals.
