Course Structure
The Graduate Program of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers two plans for the M.S. Degree: Plan I requires a thesis and Plan II requires a comprehensive examination.
- M.S. Plan I (Thesis) : Thirty-six (36) units of upper-division and graduate course work, a thesis, and a minimum of three quarters of academic residence are required.
- M.S. Plan II (Comprehensive Examination) : Thirty-six (36) units of upper-division and graduate coursework, satisfactory performance on a comprehensive final examination, and a minimum of three quarters of academic residence are required.
International Exchange & Double Degrees
Applications for all students are DUE JANUARY 15th, this means that all materials (letters of recommendation, transcripts, GRE/TOEFL scores) must be received prior to this deadline.

Requirements
Research & Technical Papers
The M.S. thesis must demonstrate the student’s proficiency in research methods and scientific analysis, and a thorough knowledge of the state-of-the-art of the student’s chosen field. Original contributions to knowledge are encouraged, but not expected, at the M.S. degree level. Thus, an M.S. thesis may consist of :
- An original technical or research contribution of limited scope.
- A critical evaluation of the state-of-the-art of a current research area.
- An advanced design project, either analytical or experimental.
Text / Exam Scores
- TOEFL scores: At least 550 on the paper-based test, 213 on the computer-based test, or 80 on the internet-based test. OFFICIAL scores must be sent directly from ETS.
- The GRE is required (as for normal applicants) for those with a UC GPA below 3.5.
