Course Structure
The Department offers programs that lead to the following degrees :
Master of Science, With Thesis (Plan I) : A minimum of 38 units and a thesis are required. Of these 38 units, 24 must come from coursework with a letter grade, including 20 units of graduate courses (200 level) from an engineering graduate program, and a minimum of 12 units from MAE graduate level courses. The remaining 4 units of required letter-graded coursework may be satisfied with graduate or upper division undergraduate coursework in engineering or any other field that is relevant to the student’s research (e.g. mathematics, biology, etc.).
Master of Science, Course-Work Only (Plan II) : A minimum of 38 units and successful completion of the Comprehensive Examination are required. 36 units of coursework must be taken for a letter grade. These 36 units must include a minimum of 32 units of graduate courses (200 level) from an engineering graduate program, with at least 18 of the 32 units from MAE courses. The remaining 4 units of required letter-graded coursework may be satisfied with graduate or upper division undergraduate coursework in engineering or any other field that is relevant to the student’s research (e.g. mathematics, biology, etc.)
International Exchange & Double Degrees
Whether you approach the issue from an academic, professional, or personal perspective – studying abroad is one of the best decisions you can make during your undergraduate career. The Education Abroad Center can help you find the right program; maximize your academic learning and the personal changes that take place abroad; and assist you in articulating the experience after you return to your friends, family or potential employer or help you study or travel again.
Internships
The college’s Internship and Career Center is one of the largest in the nation, placing more than 6,000 students in career internships every year, providing career counseling and providing you with the tools you need to succeed in your career of your choice.
Requirements
Research & Technical Papers
Aerospace
Aerospace engineering is the branch of engineering behind the design, construction and science of aircraft and spacecraft. It is broken into two major and overlapping branches: aeronautical engineering and astronautical engineering.
Energy and Environment
Improvements in the efficiency of fossil fuel combustion, along with reductions in air pollutants like ultra-fine particulate matter, will be needed for energy generation and transportation.
Design and Manufacturing
Design involves the creative use of all the basic engineering sciences to conceive practical devices that satisfy a prescribed functional specification.
Nano-Micro-Bio Systems
Research into biological systems within Mechanical Engineering encompasses studies from the scale of the human down to the scale of the atom or molecule.
Computational Sciences
Computational sciences (or scientific computing) is the field of study concerned with constructing mathematical models and numerical solution techniques and using computers to analyze and solve scientific, and mechanical and aerospace engineering problems.
Vehicles, Robotics, and Control
Control systems are an integral part of most, if not all, the systems that are analyzed and designed by mechanical and aerospace engineers.
Text / Exam Scores
At least 550 on the paper-based test, 213 on the computer-based test, or 80 on the internet-based test. OFFICIAL scores must be sent directly from ETS.
