Materials science and engineering is an interdisciplinary field that addresses the structure, processing, and property relationships in materials for engineering applications. Basic principles of chemistry and physics are applied to provide an understanding of the structure of materials and the manner in which the structure determines the properties. Scientific processing methods are then applied to yield the necessary properties, which then can be integrated with and designed to accommodate the needs of modern technology.

Course Structure
The junior year of an engineering departmental program consists largely of core courses required of all students in the program. The core courses introduce the students to the breadth of subject areas associated with the engineering discipline. During the senior year, students have the opportunity to take technical electives within the program. The technical electives allow the student to take more advanced courses in subject areas of interest. During the junior and senior years, students also complete any remaining requirements in areas such as math, writing, natural sciences, engineering fundamentals, and VLPA/I&S.
International Exchange & Double Degrees
UW Materials Science and Engineering engages in significant international collaboration. These projects provide the students with industrial perspective and access to world-class facilities and expertise.

Co-op is a great way to get hands-on experience in your field, get paid, and earn credits toward your degree. Unlike an internship, where you are working but not necessarily getting paid or earning credits, Co-op is a structured program with specific requirements for the student and employer.
