The Digital Media Design (DMD) program at Penn Engineering, in collaboration with the University’s Annenberg School for Communication and the School of Design, was created to educate a new generation of people to work in computer graphics; people who, through a combined education in both disciplines, could collaborate effectively with technologists and artists. In addition, through their communications courses, DMD students delve into what the audience of these future collaborations might perceive and the resulting impact upon society,science practice, applications to other disciplines, and research.

Course Structure

This course is focused on programming the essential geometric and mathematical concepts underlying modern computer graphics. Using 2D and 3D implementations, it covers fundamental topics on scene graphs, computational geometry, graphics algorithms, and user interface design. Programming languages introduced include C++, OpenGL, FLTK and Python.

Research & Technical Papers

Each summer a group of students performs research under the supervision of a computer graphics professor. Past research topics have included crowd simulation in a market-type environment, controlling a virtual agent using natural language processing, and simulating a crowd during a fire drill.
