The Department of Computer Science is affiliated with both the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering. Students in either college may major in computer science. A wide variety of exciting professional and academic opportunities exist for graduates of computer science including software engineering, computational finance, modeling, game design, computer graphics, robotics, artificial intelligence, internet systems and technology, security, hardware development, animation, medicine, biotechnology, business management and consulting, as well as masters and doctoral studies in computing-related fields. Computer Science majors learn about algorithms, data structures, programming languages, scientific computing, systems, and theory, and just a few of the areas they can explore are artificial intelligence, computational biology, computer graphics, computer vision, databases, and networks.

Cornell University Grant
Cornell Grants are available to students with financial need, as determined by the Office of Financial Aid and Student Employment. The aid comes from several sources – university endowments, alumni gifts, and a general fund. Things to keep in mind:
There is no minimum or maximum amount of grant awarded.
There is no standard “income bracket” or cut-off for grant aid recipients; eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis.

Course Structure
Meant here to include primarily: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Engineering, and Computing. some fields (such as Linguistics, Psychology, Economics or Philosophy, for example) offer various technical courses involving the application of mathematical, scientific and/or formal reasoning methods, and therefore may qualify as “Technical Electives” for the major in Computer Science.
Computer science majors take courses covering algorithms, data structures, logic, programming languages, systems, and theory. Electives include artificial intelligence, computer graphics, computer vision, cryptography, databases, networks, and scientific computing.
International Exchange & Double Degrees
Dual Major
If you are a CS major in Engineering and want to obtain a second major in Arts and Sciences, start attending a Dual Degree Information Session (schedule available in 172 Goldwin Smith). Complete an academic plan and have it approved by (a) the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Computer Science, (2) a faculty member in the Engineering department that you have chosen to obtain a second major, the appropriate deans in Engineering (222 Carpenter Hall) and Arts and Sciences (174 Goldwin-Smith). You have at least a 2.7 GPA and that average must be maintained.
Double Major
Here are the steps to follow if you want to double major. (1) Affiliate with the first major in the usual fashion. (2) Before the end of the junior year, petition to affiliate with the second major. The petition should include a plan of study and must be approved by both majors and the Academic Standards, Petitions, and Credit Commitee. Visit Engineering Advising in 167 Olin Hall for more details.
Internships
Apply for a specific temporary employment opportunity that is currently posted or, apply to one of Cornell general postings. The general postings allow our recruiters across campus to collect applications for individuals who have expressed an interest in various types of temporary opportunities. When a department has a temporary need, recruiters will have the ability to search for candidates to fill those roles. Cornell provides summer jobs.

Requirements
Research & Technical Papers
Undergraduate research often takes place under the auspices of course CS 4999 (Independent Study). In this context, the student works one-on-one with the professor or with the professor’s research group on some problem of mutual interest.
Undergraduate Research Projects
SimLab Modeling and Simulation Project : Brings together the technologies of geometric modeling, symbolic mathematics, numerical analysis, compilation/code generation, and formal methods to forge new software tools for creating scientific software.
High-Performance Systems Software : We develop software tools for make programs run faster on high-performance machines such as parallel machines and uniprocessors with deep memory hierarchies. Currently, we are working on a novel approach to program restructuring called “data-centric compilation” which we are using to generate blocked codes from unblocked ones and to generate sparse-matrix codes from high-level specifications.
Information Capture and Access : The information capture and access research group works on ways that computers can locate information in the ever increasing volume of online data, determine its structure, and extract the information for human users.
Independent Research
Cornell students who have an appropriate background in the field of computer science are eligible to receive academic credit (CS 4999) for doing independent research with faculty or researchers in the Department of Computer Science. Typically, students requesting research studies will have had at least 1-2 years worth of CS field course experience. The background experience that you are required to have varies depending on the nature of the study and the stated requirements of the sponsoring instructor.
Text / Exam Scores
Undergraduate colleges/schools also have specific requirements for the SAT Subject Tests. Cornell requires students to submit all scores from SAT tests taken and does not participate in the College Board’s Score Choice. your responsibility to make sure that you have taken the right Subject Tests and have the scores officially reported to Cornell from the testing agency by our application deadline.
Work Experience
Work experience is not necessary but student having relevant work experience its prefered.
Recommendations
Fields require two or three letters of recommendation. Please check field admissions requirements for your proposed field.
Letters must be submitted by faculty members from your college or institution who are acquainted with your work. If that work occurred some time ago, check with the field to see whether recommendations from those familiar with your professional performance might be acceptable.
