Energy, the environment, and health care represent the greatest challenges facing humanity in the 21st century. No single discipline is better poised to confront these challenges than Chemical Engineering. From a foundation rooted in the basic sciences of mathematics, chemistry, physics, and (increasingly) biology; a traditional engineering science core of thermodynamics, transport phenomena, and chemical kinetics; a rigorous design component; and an expanding focus on emerging topics in materials, nanotechnology, and life sciences; Chemical Engineering has grown from its petro-chemical origins to become a central discipline to state-of-the-art technologies in microelectronics, alternative energy, biomedicine, and pharmaceutics. Yale students — with their well-rounded educational backgrounds and diverse interests — are particularly well-suited to capitalize on emerging opportunities within Chemical Engineering.

A financial aid award typically includes a need-based Yale Scholarship and a student contribution (which consists of a term time job and student income). Students are not expected to take out loans. Yale financial aid covers 100% of demonstrated financial need for all undergraduates.
Yale is committed to a need-blind admissions policy and meets 100% of demonstrated need for all students regardless of citizenship. Yale does not require students to take out loans for their education. Instead, Yale meets 100% of demonstrated need for all admitted students with a financial aid package consisting of need-based scholarships, term-time employment, and a student income contribution.
Similar to admission to Yale, which includes a holistic evaluation of all parts of the admissions application, applying for financial aid at Yale is a highly individualized process. Financial aid officers review every student’s aid application carefully to ensure they understand each family’s individual financial situation. While each financial aid award is tailored to a specific family, here’s a general introduction to what you can expect from a Yale financial aid package.
The Award Every financial aid calculation consists of three interconnected parts :
– Cost of Attendance : Tuition, room, board, books, travel expenses and personal expenses for one Yale student for one full academic year.
– Expected Family Contribution : The amount a student’s family is expected to contribute towards the cost of a Yale education. Yale financial aid officers calculate this number every year based on the information you provide.
– Demonstrated Financial Need : The amount that remains after a family’s Expected Family Contribution is subtracted from the Cost of Attendance.

Course Structure
The Yale Chemical Engineering program is principally focused on basic and engineering sciences, and problem solving. Additional focus is on communication, analysis of experiments, and chemical process design. A special feature of our program is the accessibility of laboratory research — most Chemical Engineering majors participate in faculty-led research projects, often resulting in publication and/or presentation at national meetings.
Yale Chemical Engineering graduates find a wide range of professional opportunities. Many go on to top graduate programs in Chemical, Biomedical, or Environmental Engineering, or to esteemed medical, law, or business schools. Yale Chemical Engineering majors ultimately become leaders in academia, industry, government, business, and the non-profit sector.
The Department of Chemical Engineering at Yale offers the following two majors:
Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering
Program educational objectives allow graduates from the Yale Undergraduate Chemical Engineering ABET Program to :
- Achieve positions of leadership within academia, industry, and government.
- Enter and excel within top graduate programs in chemical, biomedical, environmental, and related engineering fields.
- Enter and excel within top professional schools in e.g. law, medicine, or management.
- Enter and rise within large and small corporations.

Research & Technical Papers
Engineering students are often eager to start research projects. Our favorable student-to-faculty ratio allows each student to work directly with a faculty mentor to identify research opportunities geared to their interests. All students must complete a Senior Project that may include research that prepares them for graduate study in Engineering, either at Yale or other top-rated universities.

Recommendations
Two Teacher Recommendations*
High school teachers can provide extremely helpful information in their evaluations. Not only do they discuss your performance in their particular class or classes, but they may also write about your motivation, intellectual curiosity, energy, relationships with classmates, and impact on the classroom environment. It is important that you solicit recommendations from teachers who have taught you in academic subjects, who know you well, and who have seen you at your best. It is also preferable that letters come from teachers who have taught you during your junior or senior year of high school. Please ask your teachers for letters of recommendation well in advance of application deadlines to give them ample time to write a strong letter for you. Teachers may submit letters of recommendation online, using a link you can provide them through the Common Application. Alternately, they may mail or fax letters of recommendation.

How to Apply
Mid-Year Report
The mid-year report should be submitted as soon as first trimester or first semester senior grades are available. It is important to maintain a high level of achievement throughout your senior year because Yale consider senior grades as Yale evaluate applicants. Admitted students and students who have already completed high school will be asked to submit a Final Report including a final transcript.
Submission of School Documents
Recommendations, transcripts, and other school materials may be submitted electronically through the Common Application, by mail, or by fax. Yale strongly encourage online submission whenever possible. You will have the opportunity on the Common Application website to ‘invite’ your teachers and counselor to file their forms electronically.
