Scholarships
If you have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, you may be eligible for one or more prestigious fellowships. In addition to an outstanding academic record, prestigious fellowship applicants should have made their mark in one or more other ways.
Substantial intellectual or creative projects or evidence of leadership or public service, and strong, detailed faculty letters of recommendation are essential to compete for these awards. Many of these fellowships require official endorsement from Cornell, which entails an additional on-campus selection process.

Course Structure
The field program in chemical engineering begins with a foundation in mathematics, chemistry, and physics. These fundamentals are used to develop the analytical tools of chemical engineering – fluid mechanics, chemical thermodynamics, and chemical kinetics – in the sophomore and junior years. The units of chemical processes – such as chemical reactors, bio-reactors, distillation columns, and heat exchangers – are analyzed with these tools, beginning in the junior year. In the senior year you design chemical processes by integrating process units with regard to economics, safety, and environmental impact. This program will prepare you for professional practice in traditional areas of chemical engineering – chemicals, polymers, petroleum, utilities, pharmaceuticals, and foods – as well as emerging areas of biotechnology and electronic materials.
The chemical engineering curriculum requires much more chemistry than any other engineering program. Prospective majors must plan their program carefully so that they will complete two years of chemistry before entering the junior year. If you are unsure whether you will major in chemical engineering, you are advised to take the required chemistry. Otherwise you may have to take chemistry during the summer to obtain a chemical engineering degree in four years. Chemistry in excess of that required by the College of Engineering can be used to satisfy requirements for electives in other field programs.

Internships
A career-related summer experience can help you explore your interests in a career field. It can also give you an opportunity to develop your skills further so you’ll have a competitive edge in your full-time job search.
Start early and prepare carefully: finding a good summer job or an internship will be worth your time and effort!
Requirements
Research & Technical Papers
Undergraduate research is an option for any undergraduate student interested in finding out what academic research is all about. Nearly every faculty member in the department advises undergraduate research. Students are encouraged to visit faculty websites and read about the research going on in the department, then to contact faculty about opportunities for participating in research in that research group. Often students have opportunities to present their research in undergraduate research poster sessions at Cornell and at outside scientific meetings and some students become authors on scientific papers. Many students participating in undergraduate research have gone on to top graduate programs.
Text / Exam Scores
The College of Engineering does not have a minimum SAT, since the standardized test scores are simply one aspect of an applicant’s preparation. However, we do know that of the admitted students in the class, at least 75% scored between 720-800 on their SAT math and approximately half of the class scored better than 700 on the SAT verbal.
International students for whom English is not the first language are required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score. We will waive the TOEFL and/or IELTS requirement for students who have achieved a score of 670 on the Critical Reading section of the SAT or for those who have been in the U.S. (or other nations where English is the primary language spoken) for at least 4 years. Please note that the TOEFL/IELTS is only one indicator of English proficiency. We also highly recommend the submission of a recommendation letter from an English; we review the English courses you are taking and have taken; and we evaluate your writing on the application.

How to Apply to Engineering
Cornell Engineers share a dedication to academic excellence and an intense, unbridled curiosity about mathematics and science. As a Cornell Engineer, you could find yourself immersed in interdisciplinary research, leading a student project into an international competition, and debating the latest advances in the high-tech industry with our first-rate faculty. At Cornell, the admissions process is handled by the College to which a prospective student applies. The Engineering Admissions Office in the College of Engineering coordinates the reading of all engineering applications and the selection of engineering students. The Undergraduate Admissions Office (UAO) manages the general application process and serves as a resource for students by helping them determine which college is the appropriate choice for them.
Employment Stats
Careers in Public Service
Jobs in nonprofit and government organizations (the public sector) are as varied as in business (the private sector). There are also many types and sizes of employers. Consider that:
- 10% of Americans workers are in nonprofits and 18% work in government.
- 20% of graduating Cornell seniors take public sector positions.
Employers include hospitals, museums, city and county agencies, arts & cultural organizations, research centers, think tanks, labor unions, environmental organizations, colleges, and much more.
Nonprofit and Government Career Fairs
On-Campus Dozens of local, state, and national organizations will be here to discuss full-time positions, volunteer roles, internships and summer jobs, and to provide career advice. Off-Campus Cornell Career Services collaborates with several other colleges and universities to offer nonprofit career fairs in three cities each year:
- Boston NFP Career Fair
- Philadelphia NFP Career Fair
Career Events
The Engineering Co-op & Career Services Office posts summer job listings all year, but mostly in the spring, on Cornell CareerNet. There are a number of Career Fairs that occur on campus throughout the year, as well as off campus, that Cornell students from all years are encouraged to attend to assist in securing internships. Additionally, prominent employers typically conduct 700+ summer intern interviews on campus. Students are encouraged to attend workshops and meet with career advisors for résumé, cover letter, and job search strategy assistance.
Top Recruiters
on-campus recruiting program
The Cornell Career Services on-campus recruiting program offers currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to interview on campus for positions following graduation, as well as some summer internships. We use a program called CCNet, Jobs and Internships to manage recruiting activities.
Career Fairs and Events
A variety of recruiting events—from large employer career fairs to more intimate consortia where interviewing may occur—give students and employers an opportunity to learn more about each other.
New York Recruiting Consortium
Employers representing banking and finance, consulting, retail, advertising, law, and various other fields interview Arts and Sciences and Human Ecology students in New York City in January.

The evaluation of your secondary school transcript is an important part of the admission process. We are not simply looking for high grades; the strength of your academic program is also considered. In addition, the admission committee makes note of any accelerated, honors, or Advanced Placement courses taken.Every secondary school is different in its level of competitiveness and in the range of courses offered. These factors are also considered when admission decisions are rendered.
