Course Structure
The 4-year BME core curriculum is a total of 128 credits. At UW-Madison, new students admitted to the College of Engineering are assigned to the pre-engineering classification. All pre-engineering students take the same basic science and math courses and transfer into a degree-granting program as soon as they are eligible, usually in the first semester of the Sophomore year.

Internships
Cooperative Education and Internship Program
Students gain invaluable “real world” engineering experiences working with a variety of industries and governmental agencies throughout the world during our dynamic co-op/summer intern program. Employers have the opportunity to hire outstanding students early in their engineering education and to participate in the education process while pre-screening potential full-time hires.
COOPERATIVE EDUCATION.
Requires the completion of up to 12 months of engineering experience distributed over three work terms. Participants are undergraduates and typically begin during the sophomore or junior years. The three work terms are comprised of summers and semesters.
THE MODIFIED CO-OP
Begins in January or June and provides continuous employment for approximately eight months. This co-op lends itself best to employers with project-based work that requires more extensive training. Undergraduates may participate during the sophomore, junior or senior years.
THE SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
For employers seeking undergraduate or graduate students during the summer months. These assignments provide students exposure to engineering while enabling the employer to fill short-term project needs.
Requirements
Research & Technical Papers
Applied Neuro MRI Laboratory
New magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods are developed to visualize the structure and function of the brain and to translate these methods to the hospital for clinical diagnosis. One of the areas is functional MRI (fMRI). FMRI can help visualize both the temporal and spatial patterns of brain activity in response to different stimuli.
Binaural Physiology Laboratory
The laboratory is interested in the neuronal mechanisms underlying binaural hearing, with particular emphasis on sound localization. Presently, the laboratory has two major directions of research: one which is aimed at understanding the neural circuitry for encoding the acoustic cues used in localization and the other which uses behavioral methods to study localization in awake, behaving animals.
Bioelectromagnetics Group
Research activities are motivated by the goal of developing innovative microwave imaging and sensing techniques for diagnostic or therapeutic applications.
Biomaterials/Tissue Engineering Laboratory :
Research focuses on the role of biomaterials in the management of various pathological conditions. The program is highly interdisciplinary with an emphasis at the biology and engineering/chemistry interface.
Text / Exam Scores
- Scores from either the ACT or the SAT are required and must be sent directly from the testing agency. College also requires the standardized writing test.
- Students for whom English is not their first language, and who have studied in a language other than English must take an official test of English as a foreign language. UW–Madison accepts both the TOEFL and the IELTS tests.
