Course Structure
UM BME offers three unique concentrations for specialization. The three concentrations are: Electrical (E), Mechanical (M), and Premedical (P).The engineering design experience is interwoven in the curriculum throughout the students’ four years of study. The students then enroll in 23 mandatory BME credits (Biomaterials, Biomechanics and Biomedical Measurements, Mathematical Analysis in BME, Biomedical Transport Phenomena, Biomedical Signal Processing and Biomedical Instrumentation) as juniors and seniors. In addition to the above compulsory courses, each student participates in a year-long, 3 credit Senior Design Project. This design experience is a comprehensive project where students pool all knowledge and previous design experience into one major project, integrating the various components of the curriculum. Students prepare written and oral presentations. They also select two or three technical electives to pursue their individual professional interests.
International Exchange & Double Degrees
Undergraduate BME students have the opportunity to participate in the University of Miami’s Study Abroad program coordinated by the University’s Office of International Education and Exchange Programs. This exchange program allows students to complete one semester abroad at a host Institution which partners with the University of Miami.
Internships
Biomedical Engineering Internship Program :
The Department of Biomedical Engineering, in cooperation with the Whitaker Foundation, has established an Industrial Internship Program to prepare students for careers in the biotechnology and medical device industry. The program endeavors to provide students with invaluable exposure to the “real world” prior to graduation. Students have the opportunity to apply their academic experience to industry while participating in industrial projects and experiencing research and development, marketing and manufacturing.
Requirements
Research & Technical Papers
The Department of Biomedical Engineering promotes the participation of undergraduate students in research. Many of undergraduate students conduct research in laboratories at the Department of Biomedical Engineering and at the School of Medicine, or are hired as research or engineering interns by the local biomedical industry.
Biomedical Engineering and Affiliated Laboratories
The biomedical engineering laboratories are located in the College of Engineering on the Coral Gables campus and in the School of Medicine on the Medical Campus in the Miami Health District, near Downtown Miami.
