USC’s Bachelor of Science program in Biomedical Engineering was launched in 1974. Since its inception, the BME program has attracted many of the highest-achieving students at USC, including University valedictorians and salutatorians, as well as School of Engineering valedictorians. All BME degrees combine high-level coursework from mathematics, the sciences, engineering, and USC’s general education program. The biochemical area of emphasis begins with the BME core curriculum and then adds a carefully selected course sequence that allows for more in depth work in chemistry.

Scholarships
- USC offers several scholarships to help undergraduate students pay for their education. These funds come from a variety of university, federal, state, and private sources but unlike loans, they do not have to repaid.
- Scholarships are reserved for students with special qualifications, such as academic, athletic, or artistic talent. Awards are also available for students who are interested in particular fields of study, are members of underrepresented groups, or who live in certain areas of the country.
- USC Merit Scholarships:-USC Merit Scholarships require students to apply for admission to the University by the December 1 deadline. All students who meet the December 1 deadline will be automatically considered for a scholarship.
- Ranging in value from a few thousand dollars up to full tuition, merit scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence, leadership, service and talent. These include the full-tuition, four-year Mork Family and Trustee scholarships, the half-tuition Presidential Scholarship, and the one-quarter tuition Deans Scholarship.

Course Structure
The B.S. in Biomedical Engineering requires three to four technical elective courses which students fulfill by completing courses in a selected area of specialization.
International Exchange & Double Degrees
Double Major (B.A./B.A. or B.S./B.S.):-
A double major consists of two majors which allow the student to earn the same degree, either a B.A. or B.S. degree, within the college. The student must complete the requirements for both majors and whatever other course work is needed to complete 128 units. Combinations of interdepartmental and department majors are also possible
Internships
Cooperative Education, or Co-op, is an academic program designed to provide undergraduate engineering students the opportunity to enhance their engineering curriculum through practical, industry appropriate, work experience. Co-op is similar to an internship; however, it is a longer, often recurring, experience. The typical co-op assignment is 4 to 8 months long, with the student working an adjacent summer and semester. Students participating in the program receive academic credit (often technical elective credit) and get paid. In addition, co-op satisfies CPT for undergraduate F1 students.
Requirements
Research & Technical Papers
- Biomedical Engineering research at USC has been directed to the study of the function and structure of living systems, as well as the application of engineering science to problems in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
- The department’s primary faculty conduct innovative research in numerous areas of fundamental importance in biomedicine. Current research is supported by government agencies, private foundations, and industries including: the National Institutes of Health (NCRR, NHLBI, NIBIB, NIA, NIMH); the National Science Foundation (Bioengineering, Integrative Biology and Neural Science); Office of Naval Research; Defense Advanced Research Project Agency; NASA; American Heart Associations; American Lung Association; the Whitaker Foundation.
- The Department has also had a history of large program grants from the NIH, including a Biomedical Engineering Program Project Grant awarded in 1968, a Biomedical Engineering Center Grant awarded in 1977, and the currently active Biomedical Simulations Resource (1985) and Ultrasound Transducer Research Center (1996).
Text / Exam Scores
International first-year applicants with minimum scores of 600 on SAT Critical Reading or 27 on ACT English are exempt from taking the TOEFL.
Work Experience
- Student researchers actively participate in the development of new technology throughout their undergraduate careers.
- In addition to giving students excellent first-hand experience, this program can help offset the cost of education since each participant earns an annual stipend for his or her work. This renewable award is separate from other financial assistance offered by the university.
