Scholarships
Financial support for most graduate students may be found in the form of fellowships, teaching and research assistant-ships. Many students are also able to find employment during the summer months in local industry. Fellowships are an excellent form of support. We encourage you to check for current information of available fellowships with our Graduate Division. We strongly encourage all our applicants to apply for financial assistance from sources outside the university as well. Government fellowships, such as the National Science Foundation Fellowship (NSF), and the National Defense Science and Engineering (NDSEG) are excellent examples of outside fellowships. International students should also review the information at the Berkeley International Office.

Course Structure
Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering can be done in conjunction with a PhD (for the MS/PhD option) or alone. Degrees are granted after completion of programs of study that emphasize the application of the natural sciences to the analysis and solution of engineering problems. Advanced courses in mathematics, chemistry, physics, and the life sciences are normally included in a program that incorporates the engineering systems approach for analysis of problems. Students must have a bachelors degree in one of the accredited engineering curricula or satisfy the equivalent of a bachelors degree in engineering as determined by the department concerned for admission to this program.
International Exchange & Double Degrees
To supplement a degree in Mechanical Engineering, students also have the option of also participate in any of the following programs:
- The Engineering and Business for Sustainability
- Designated Emphasis in Energy Science and Technology – DEEST
- Designated Emphasis in Development Engineering – Dev Eng
- Computational Science and Engineering
- Course Work Only (CWO)
